As you’d expect, Athens is rich in culture. It’s like an open-air museum! But you might not expect the friendliness of the Athenians themselves.

According to one expat, “The mailman knows my travel schedule and where to leave packages when I’m away, without me ever saying a word. When I take a taxi home late at night, nine times out of ten the driver waits until I’m in the front door before he drives away. There is a kindness and a concern among the Greek people that is rare to find these days.”

Once you’ve taken in the wonders of the Acropolis, Parthenon and countless temples, you’ll be surprised at how much diversity and excitement there is outside of the tourist zone.

Plaka, Monastiraki, Kolonaki, Exarchia, Psiri—each district is full of cafés, bars, restaurants, and shopping, and each is fascinating in its own way—vibrant, inviting, and easily accessible.

In Athens, you can enjoy the best of cosmopolitan living for much less than you’d pay in the States. Rent a 2-bed apartment in the heart of Athens for less than $700. A 3-course meal for two will set you back about $55.

Just 30 minutes from downtown Athens—and easily accessible via public transport—is the Athens Riviera.

It’s a quiet weekend getaway for Greeks-in-the-know who want high-class restaurants overlooking a world-class beach without a tourist in sight. For many expats, it offers the best of all worlds.

And rentals are bargain priced here too. Figure $550 a month for an apartment with 3 bedrooms.

Daytime temperatures stay around the lower end of the 60s F for the winter months of December, January, and February, then climb steadily to a summer average of around 85 F.

Healthcare—High Quality, Low Cost

Another way expats in Greece say they save buckets is on healthcare costs.

As one American who lives in Athens explains, “It’s €20 to €40 to go see a doctor, out-of-pocket. And the doctors are good. A lot of them train in Germany or the U.K., then move here because they love the place too.”

Another says, “Last summer I had to go to the doctor for an eye infection. I went for an eye exam and was given a prescription for antibacterial cream. The cost for the visit? Zero. Healthcare in public hospitals is free for Greeks and expats alike. The administrator looked confused when I asked where to pay. The cost of the prescription? Four dollars.”

The quality of medical care in Greece is excellent, especially in major centers like Athens and Thessaloniki. In more remote parts of the country, you may find the level of English spoken by your doctor a bit more hit-or-miss.

Emergency healthcare is free regardless of nationality. For non-emergencies, most expats opt for some form of private health insurance, which provides better quality care and shorter waiting times than the Greek public system provides. Pharmacies are abundant throughout the country—Greece has more pharmacists per capita than any other nation in Europe.
